What is a Life settlement?

A life settlement is the sale of an existing life insurance policy in the secondary market by a policy owner to anyone other than the insured for an amount that exceeds the cash surrender value of the policy but is less than the face value. Frequently, the purchasers of life settlements are institutional investors. The value of the life insurance asset is realized by acquiring ownership of the policy from the seller through a lump sum payment, making the premium payments during the remainder of the life of the insured, and then collecting the policy death benefit upon the demise of the insured. Asset valuations are determined by pricing models that incorporate the investor’s target IRR and risk management requirements.  Life settlement assets may also be aggregated into portfolios and managed as pools.
